3-23-23: Welcome to Older Women and Literature, or OWLS. Owls are the symbol of Athena, Greek Goddess of Wisdom, and my hope is that age has brought and can still bring wisdom to us all, in this case, through the power of books.
In the 1960s, with an honors degree in English, I felt I needed to do something to make the world a better place, and so went on for advanced degrees in both social work and psychology.
Over the years, as I developed community programs for parents with young children, and became a mom and a volunteer, I also started or led three book groups (two with my husband). For the past 40 years I have written newsletters and book reviews for varied organizations and publications.
One of my favorite activities as a parent, a professional, and a friend has been finding books to match the interests and needs of family and others close to me. That’s what this blog aims to do.
I welcome feedback and suggestions. Please contact me at: [email protected]
Thank you,
Deborah Cherniss, Highland Park, N J

Deborah: I’d follow your book trail anywhere! Didn’t I follow you (and Cary) for 20+ years with people of the Book?
I agree there’s a niche for OWLS. Looking forward to sharing—
This Blog will be my first!
Looking forward to your suggestions.
Hello Deborah,
How exciting to fulfill a long held dream. Congratulations! I look forward to reading your reviews. MaryEllen
Deborah – What a wonderful idea! I’ve never read a blog before, so this is my inaugural effort. I’ll look forward to seeing your book suggestions and, perhaps, send you some of my own (is that permitted?).
Hi Mara,
Your suggestions are welcome!!!
This idea might be a first and if not it should be an interesting adventure. Looking forward!
What a creative idea, Deborah. It’s a gift to all of us!
What a great idea!! Loved the two reviews and look forward to more. Such a professional and well done endeavor. So proud of my big sisty!!
Great idea, Deb. Do you have book titles yet?
It also occurs to me to wonder how you define “older”. At what age does a woman qualify? Hmmmmm
Anne Serafin
Hi Anne,
Yes, I have titles – but would love more!
And the definition of “older woman” is up to the reader! As for characters – any age that can illuminate issues that are emotionally and/or intellectually nourishing to “older women” – let’s say those past child-bearing and raising years or 50 years and older.
Wonderful, Deborah! I can’t wait to read more! So lovely that you are making your dream come true!
As an avid reader I am always looking for new material. Can’t wait.
Love this, Deborah!!
This is a wonderful idea and I will be a frequent follower. Thank you for using your many talents and skills toward such a meaningful cause.
